Ronaldo Fires United Through

Cristiano Ronaldo fired United through to the Semi Finals of the Champions League with a stunning 40 yard strike that was unstoppable.

It was United's first clean sheet since their Champions League victory over Inter Milan on 11 March and it could not have been more timely as United became the first English club to win at Porto in European competition. With Rio Ferdinand restored to the side after a three-game absence there was an increased assuredness to the United backline and in truth, Porto failed to create any clear-cut openings until Lisandro's 85th-minute chance.

However, United's failure to score a decisive second goal ensured a nervous final few minutes to the tie as Porto pushed for the equaliser that would have put them through on the away goals rule.

The first 20 minutes of the match must have been close to perfect for United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who was presiding over his 150th Champions League game. Wayne Rooney started on the right with Ryan Giggs on the left and Ronaldo supporting Berbatov up front. This formation allowed Ronaldo to occasionally drop deep in search of possession, which he did after six minutes before smashing his amazing goal.

United dominated possession, allowing them to play the game at a steady, controlled tempo, and there were few alarms for Van der Sar, who allowed a free-kick from Bruno Alves to drift wide of his goal.

Porto gradually forced their way into the match, slowly pushing United towards their own goal, and Van der Sar was eventually forced into action to save Christian Sapanuru's shot on the turn while Bruno Alves headed wide from a free-kick. The home team lost momentum when Lucho Gonzalez was stretchered off the field after a delay while he received treatment and United went on to create a brilliant chance to take full control of the match.

John O'Shea flicked on Giggs's corner and the ball dropped invitingly to the unmarked Vidic but the defender's effort flew wastefully over the crossbar.

Porto's Raul Meireles and Hulk shot over after the break, while Berbatov collected a beautifully weighted pass from Rooney but his subsequent shot lacked power and Helton saved. By this stage it was pouring down in Porto but Van der Sar made no mistake with a Hulk free-kick, while Rolando headed wide beyond the far post for the home side.

The visitors continued to press and the match became increasingly tense as United dropped deeper and deeper. But it was United, who play Everton in an FA Cup semi-final on Sunday, who went close to a second goal, with Helton making a good low save to claw away Ronaldo's shot.

Ronaldo: My Greatest Goal

Ronaldo: My Greatest Goal

Cristiano Ronaldo has hailed his goal last night against Porto as the best he has ever scored!

"It is the best I have scored," he said. "It was a fantastic strike and I can't wait to see it again on DVD. I am very happy with it."

"This win will give us confidence," said Ronaldo. "In the last five games we did not play great and I hope this will change that. It's going to be a fantastic semi-final. Arsenal play fantastic football and it will be a tough game. We know each other well, I just hope we win the tie and go to the final."

Sir Alex Ferguson must have seen a few great goals in his time, but he still considered it one of the best!

"It was unbelievable - a magnificent hit," said the United boss. "It took them by surprise and the keeper had no chance. To do it at that point gave us a real platform."

"He's the quickest player we have and we felt in that role he would stretch their two centre-halves. The goal was obviously sensational and he was always a threat, always willing to attack their defence. He's probably played better in a lot of games but he was isolated a lot of the time and yet his contribution was still very good. We wanted to start the game quickly, to show our intent that we wanted to win, but no one could have expected that kind of goal."

Ronaldo a Real Player?

Ronaldo a Real Player?

Is Cristiano Ronaldo already a Real Madrid player?! News just in has come from ex-Real supremo Ramon Calderon (the one who was leading the chase for Ronny all summer but failed). He has since been ousted from his post, but says that he has left the club in great shape, with one of teh World's best already contracted to join the club!

Speaking on French radio station RMC, Calderon said: "Anyone who becomes the next president will have at his disposal one of the best players in the world, who is already formally committed to Real Madrid. I cannot give any names, but all I can say is that thanks to the difficult and laborious work that I did last year, he is already formally a Madrid player."

Rumours that Ronaldo has agreed to join Madrid have resurfaced in recent weeks, forcing the player to deny he is planning to move: "I am happy at this club. I think it is the right club."

Under-achiever Ronaldo can't wing another player of the year award

If Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the PFA player of the year for the third successive year there is something seriously wrong with the award.

The Manchester United winger would be the first player to achieve the hat-trick but he does not deserve it. If the fact that the Old Trafford club have five out six nominees has not already put many fans off who may have been interested in the award, returning Ronaldo certainly would.

Even Sir Alex Ferguson didn't mention the Portuguese when he ran through a list of his star performers this season and you have to hope that the players who vote have not been blinded by his past.

Injured, uninterested, theatrical and out of form in the first half of the season, this campaign for Ronaldo should be remembered as the one United managed to keep him for but little else.

By his standards he has let himself down and last summer his flirting with Real Madrid let United down.

If he wins the PFA player of the year, his fellow professionals will have let themselves down too.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Loveliest Girlfriends

Ronaldo’s Loveliest Girlfriends

For those who didn’t know, Cristiano Ronaldo (full name Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro) was named after the evil American politician/actor Ronald Reagan, which, as people to be named after goes, is only a few back from calling your child Adolf, Judas, or Jack the Ripper.

All of that aside, Ronaldo’s had a great couple of days—voted footballer of the year, wore a leather jacket—so to celebrate, we thought we’d have a dreamy look back on some of the more beautiful women he’s had sex with since he moved to Manchester. For probably legal/financial reasons, I haven’t included the many prostitutes.

Merche Romero

Merche (possibly pronounced “mirsh”) played the part of a Mrs. Robinson character in Ronaldo’s life, being practically an old biddy at 31 years old. A TV presenter in Portugal, when word got out that she’d been snogging Ronaldo, scores of angry young fans started threatening to kill her. They soon split up.

Gemma Atkinson

If you don’t happen to own a television, you might never have seen Gemma—she was the man-voiced female star of Hollyoaks, who went on to become the totally mute glamour model wandering silently around the I’m A Celebrity jungle. She was once proudly Ronaldo’s female resting place.

Karina Ferro

Very little is known about Karina here, except that she’s a lucky Portuguese model who once had the pleasure of standing in front of her family and friends and declaring herself Cristiano’s woman—shortly before he left her.

Mia Judaken

Only a few short weeks ago, it seemed that the dazzling lover/winger might have calmed down and settled into the kind arms of family friend, Mia—a girl who would happily flit between her It Girl lifestyle in Bel Air and the leather sheets of Ronaldo’s impressive boudoir. But before everyone knew it, he’d jacked her in.

Nereida Gallardo

And to his ex-lover—the curvaceous model/human Nereida. When she’s not on beaches modeling her bosoms, the 25-year-old does normal things like eating, laughing, and sometimes talking. The pair are rumored to bloody love each other a lot.

Cristiano Ronaldo Believes Manchester United Can Scoop All Five Major Honours

The match-winning World Player of the Year believes Sir Alex Ferguson's men are in a position where they can claim all the silverware on offer.

Having already won the FIFA World Club Championship and the League Cup, Manchester United remain in the most enviable of positions as they could yet add the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup and the Premier League to their list of seasonal honours. The Mancunians remain in two semi-finals and command a lofty position in the division.
Fleet-footed trickster Ronaldo - who scored a thunderous 40-yard drive to ensure United negotiated their way past Porto last night - believes that his side have the talent at their disposal to scoop the lot.

He told British tabloid The Sun, "We have an opportunity to win everything and we are very confident that we can. We did not play fantastic in the last five or six games but we expect the next ones will be better because of what we did last night."

Regarding his own stunning effort, the Portuguese international said it is the best he has netted.

"It was a fantastic strike and I can't wait to see it again on DVD,” he smiled. “I am very happy with it.

"It is the best goal I have scored."

The long drawn-out summer transfer stories have yet to begin, but Real Madrid have started the ball rolling by suggesting that Cristiano Ronaldo is already committed to the Spanish giants. In an interview with French radio, Roman Calderon, the former Real Madrid president who resigned in January after a voting scandal, said that the Manchester United winger will move to the club next season thanks to the ground work put in last year to secure his services.

And although Calderon refused to name the player directly, it was clear who the Spaniard was referring to. He told RMC: “Anyone who becomes the next president will have at his disposal one of the best players in the world, who is already formally committed to Real Madrid.

“I cannot give any names, but all I can say is that thanks to the difficult and laborious work that I did last year, he is already formally a Madrid player, subject obviously to him being able to sign the relevant contract.”

Calderon has yet to be officially replaced at Real Madrid, whose presidential elections take place this summer.

Ronaldo has been the catalyst of constant speculation linking him to Real Madrid. It is also claimed that Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, has an agreement for Real to take the player to Spain for a record £75 million.

Goals to gold: Ronaldo signs for oil firm Castrol

LONDON (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a two-year sponsorship deal with motor oil company Castrol.

The World Cup sponsor announced Thursday that the Manchester United and Portugal winger will be a "global ambassador" for the company's football initiatives heading into the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Portugal is struggling to qualify for the World Cup, trailing Group 1 leaders Denmark and Hungary by four points.

But with United, the 24-year-old Ronaldo is enjoying more success. He has already won the Club World Cup and English League Cup this season. He was named FIFA's player of the year in January.

Ronaldo scored a spectacular long-range goal Wednesday to secure a 1-0 victory over FC Porto and a spot in the Champions League semifinals against Arsenal. The defending champion Reds Devils are also top of the Premier League and preparing for an FA Cup semifinal against Everton on Sunday.
