Goals to gold: Ronaldo signs for oil firm Castrol

LONDON (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a two-year sponsorship deal with motor oil company Castrol.

The World Cup sponsor announced Thursday that the Manchester United and Portugal winger will be a "global ambassador" for the company's football initiatives heading into the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Portugal is struggling to qualify for the World Cup, trailing Group 1 leaders Denmark and Hungary by four points.

But with United, the 24-year-old Ronaldo is enjoying more success. He has already won the Club World Cup and English League Cup this season. He was named FIFA's player of the year in January.

Ronaldo scored a spectacular long-range goal Wednesday to secure a 1-0 victory over FC Porto and a spot in the Champions League semifinals against Arsenal. The defending champion Reds Devils are also top of the Premier League and preparing for an FA Cup semifinal against Everton on Sunday.
