Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo told Spanish television station Tele 5 that he was delighted with life at his new club.

Real Madrid have put in place a deal with Cristiano Ronaldo's advisers that will see him leave Manchester United this summer if the world footballer of the year gets his way. Ronaldo remains determined to move to the Bernabéu and it is understood his salary and contractual terms have already been determined as part of a planned world-record £75m transfer.

Ronaldo's representatives have held extensive talks with Madrid and, according to informed sources, categorically informed the Spanish club last September that he had no intention of remaining in Manchester beyond the end of the current season. It is understood that various pledges were made to ensure the deal happens and that everyone involved in the negotiations made a pact not to discuss the agreement in public.

That strategy explains why Ronaldo has stopped talking about his "dream move", but it proved too difficult for one of Real's club's directors, Pedro Trapote, who tipped off the El Mundo newspaper in December. "If you are asking me what we are going to do now, then I would tell you that we have already signed the best player for the summer," he said in a recorded interview, intended to be an off-the-record briefing. Asked to clarify that he meant Ronaldo, he added: "The best of the best. It is Cristiano, there is no other. It is better that we do not say anything at the moment, though. It is best to not say anything because there are some clauses that prevent us from announcing it now."

Sir Alex Ferguson reacted furiously at the time, insisting that he would not "sell a virus" to "that mob", but it now appears that Trapote was speaking in good faith, having been privy to what was taking place behind the scenes.

Ronaldo is said to be intent on getting his way and that means, unless United show the kind of resistance that was evident when they blocked the same move last summer, there is a distinct possibility the Premier League will lose its most recognisable player in the coming months.

There are conflicting reports about United's current position. Ever since it became apparent that Ronaldo wanted to play in Spain, United's official line has been that he is under contract until 2012 and is not for sale. That stance has not altered, but Real and Ronaldo's camp believe they made a breakthrough behind the scenes. Indeed, there are claims that the two clubs began talks earlier this season and that United have accepted Ronaldo's position. It helps the negotiation process that Ramón Calderón, the Madrid president who orchestrated last summer's affair and irritated United so much in the process, is no longer in office, having been replaced by Vicente Boluda.

Calderón's conduct made keeping Ronaldo at United a point of principle to Ferguson and his chief executive, David Gill. They always knew, however, that Ronaldo was in Manchester against his wishes, and the revelation that he is planning to resurrect the transfer is news they have been dreading since the start of the season – even though it hardly represents a shock. "The mistake last year was to speak about Madrid so much," Ronaldo's godfather, Fernao Sousa, said recently. "This year hardly anyone is saying anything and it is certain the transfer will go much better."

Ronaldo's cousin, Luis Felipe, added: "He's won everything with United and he needs new challenges with a new team."

Ronaldo is currently United's leading scorer with 18 goals, but he managed 42 in the previous campaign, and there have been times when his body language, scarcely celebrating some goals, has come under scrutiny. Nonetheless, Ferguson's determination to keep him is understandable given Ronaldo's standing in the world game and the fact that, at 24, he is still relatively young in football terms.

In total, Ronaldo has scored 110 goals for United in 233 starts and 47 substitute appearances – a staggering strike-rate for a player who is essentially a right-winger.

The question is whether United's owners, the Glazer family, can turn down such a huge financial deal in the current economic climate. Ferguson will hope they can, but the manager has acknowledged that playing for Real is the pinnacle for a player of Ronaldo's Iberian background and it has stuck in his mind, from their talks last summer, that the player already thinks he has achieved everything he can in England.

It was United's first clean sheet since their Champions League victory over Inter Milan on 11 March and it could not have been more timely as United became the first English club to win at Porto in European competition. With Rio Ferdinand restored to the side after a three-game absence there was an increased assuredness to the United backline and in truth, Porto failed to create any clear-cut openings until Lisandro's 85th-minute chance.

However, United's failure to score a decisive second goal ensured a nervous final few minutes to the tie as Porto pushed for the equaliser that would have put them through on the away goals rule.

The first 20 minutes of the match must have been close to perfect for United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who was presiding over his 150th Champions League game. Wayne Rooney started on the right with Ryan Giggs on the left and Ronaldo supporting Berbatov up front. This formation allowed Ronaldo to occasionally drop deep in search of possession, which he did after six minutes before smashing his amazing goal.

United dominated possession, allowing them to play the game at a steady, controlled tempo, and there were few alarms for Van der Sar, who allowed a free-kick from Bruno Alves to drift wide of his goal.

Porto gradually forced their way into the match, slowly pushing United towards their own goal, and Van der Sar was eventually forced into action to save Christian Sapanuru's shot on the turn while Bruno Alves headed wide from a free-kick. The home team lost momentum when Lucho Gonzalez was stretchered off the field after a delay while he received treatment and United went on to create a brilliant chance to take full control of the match.

John O'Shea flicked on Giggs's corner and the ball dropped invitingly to the unmarked Vidic but the defender's effort flew wastefully over the crossbar.

Porto's Raul Meireles and Hulk shot over after the break, while Berbatov collected a beautifully weighted pass from Rooney but his subsequent shot lacked power and Helton saved. By this stage it was pouring down in Porto but Van der Sar made no mistake with a Hulk free-kick, while Rolando headed wide beyond the far post for the home side.

The visitors continued to press and the match became increasingly tense as United dropped deeper and deeper. But it was United, who play Everton in an FA Cup semi-final on Sunday, who went close to a second goal, with Helton making a good low save to claw away Ronaldo's shot.

If Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the PFA player of the year for the third successive year there is something seriously wrong with the award.

The Manchester United winger would be the first player to achieve the hat-trick but he does not deserve it. If the fact that the Old Trafford club have five out six nominees has not already put many fans off who may have been interested in the award, returning Ronaldo certainly would.

Even Sir Alex Ferguson didn't mention the Portuguese when he ran through a list of his star performers this season and you have to hope that the players who vote have not been blinded by his past.

Injured, uninterested, theatrical and out of form in the first half of the season, this campaign for Ronaldo should be remembered as the one United managed to keep him for but little else.

By his standards he has let himself down and last summer his flirting with Real Madrid let United down.

In an interview with French radio, Roman Calderon, the former Real Madrid president who resigned in January after a voting scandal, said that the Manchester United winger will move to the club next season thanks to the ground work put in last year to secure his services.

And although Calderon refused to name the player directly, it was clear who the Spaniard was referring to. He told RMC: “Anyone who becomes the next president will have at his disposal one of the best players in the world, who is already formally committed to Real Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his delight at how the club's season has panned out so far.

United have just set a new Premier League record by notching their 12th consecutive clean sheet against Everton, and have more importantly stretched their lead at the top to five points over chasers Liverpool and Chelsea.

Naturally, praise has been widespread for Ronaldo and his team-mates in recent weeks, and the Portuguese admits that he has been pleased with his own contribution to the campaign.

Someone once told me, even if you hate someone, try looking at the positive qualities of that person and you might change your mind. Ever since I've seen him, I've harboured deep hatred for Cristiano Ronaldo. He has always been up there on my list of most hated people, sometimes I’ve had reasons for hating him, and sometimes none at all. Yes I know, it doesn’t make me sound like a great person but emotions are hard to control.

One of the articles I’ve written, entitled ‘Why the World Hates Cristiano Ronaldo’, seemed to get me quite a few haters, on and off B/R. Now, this is not an attempt to ‘suck up’; I am merely trying to find reasons that suggest, to myself and other Cristiano haters that he isn’t such a bad person after all.

I’ve never, no matter what, doubted the talent oozing out of this youngster and he definitely has style – Yes this is the part where you gasp in disbelief over me complimenting the ever so famous “CR7”

Intelligence: Is Cristiano really smart? Or plain stupid?

No one, not even me, can deny Cristiano the ‘smart’ tag. Although he does have the tendency to come off a little over smart at times, I wonder if it’s all an act. The tantrums and arrogance has definitely increased his popularity, even if it may not be very positive. More people know him, more people talk about him and thus more people watch him. His antics make him unpredictable and I’m told ‘fun to watch.’ Which is – and it hurts me deeply to say this – very true.

"Diving is an art" people say; it now has become a part of football and if anybody should be hailed diving King, it's Cristiano. To risk your individual popularity and glory (because diving is frowned upon) in order to score a goal for your team, shows selflessness and a bit of integrity and until I wrote that last line, it was the last thing I’d associate Cristiano with. I know I don’t know him personally and who was I to judge, but since I’ve seen some change in him and so I’m ready to change my opinion about him too

Improvement

Although he started off, even at a young age as a great player, he seems to be improving. Cristiano used to be selfish and yes, a bit whiny too, but I’ve seen change. Although I hate him, I do watch him play and I’ve seen him improve a lot under Sir Alex Ferguson. Earlier known as a ball hog, he’s been assisting Rooney a lot lately, and thinking more about scoring goals for the team rather than just himself.

The Crying

At first, and for a very long time the crying really annoyed me. The shocking, over done break down after the Euro’s in 2004 didn’t impress me at all. When John Terry broke down after missing the penalty last season , something made me feel bad for him, but it wasn’t like that for Cristiano Ronaldo. I clearly remember saying ‘Yuck, what a baby!’

The ‘wink’ in 2006 during the world cup had me baffled. How and why in the world is he trying to portray himself as a sensitive person and yet shows so much attitude? Doesn’t he know it’s the foundation for a worldwide Anti-Ronaldo campaign? That it might make him seem fake? Yet with an exception of few, many seem to love him. He got even more popular and became a ‘celebrity’.

Cristiano, cried, threw tantrums and pouted, yet was exceptionally good on the field –and as any Manchester United fan how good. Even after the most childish tantrum you can still see people, grown up men even, wearing United shirts with the number 7 on their back.

Skills

Everyone knows about Cristiano’s skills, his famous step over and the creativity in his football. Moaning, whining and hitting the ground howling in faked pain is also, in my opinion one of his skills! How many times have I tried to fake an injury and no one ever fell for it? For that I applaud him. If only he could have taught me a few things in school, I wouldn’t have to bother with Algebra every Tuesday, and I’d just fake an injury. Woo.

He is very good with the ball – by ball I mean football. Cristiano emulates inventiveness and style and almost always brings forth an element of surprise. Why watch boring old soap actors, when you’ve got the real deal?

The Metro-sexualness

Everyone wants to look pretty. Even men. Hairy eyebrows, hairy legs and stupid hair is definitely a turn off and I guess that’s something Cristiano realised. The plucked eyebrows and waxed legs may work, but dumping loads of hair gel on his head, I was never sure of.

But, like I said , he’s a celebrity. The world watches him, he has the right to want to look good, so hey, every man for himself.

What HE Says...

Randomly coming across some of Cristiano’s quotes, I realised he is human. When you hate someone so much that you stop thinking of him as a human being that’s when you know it’s really bad. I’d like you to try and imagine how hard it is for me to write this, being such a huge hater of Ronaldo, but I do appreciate good football, and that’s what I’m trying to prove. Even if I hate a person and he’s talented I will not deny it. I’m trying to convince myself that there is more to him than the diving and winking.

"A part of the supporters show themselves to be more unhappy than others. But I hope to change their minds. When I put on the United shirt I give my maximum. Nobody can condemn me on this”

And he’s right, I haven’t seen him give anything less that his best, and he knows it!

To be honest, none of that is true. I’ve hated Cristiano for four years! Not because he was a bad player, but because he didn’t play fair, because he seemed like an immature brat who didn’t seem to want to grow up.

I feel he has bettered since those days, so why should I go insulting him for no specific reason?

Think of this as a peace offering, an admission of true talent and maybe a new era of my life. Where I may learn to start hating less (well it’s only Cristiano I’ve ever really hated, but still) and accept talent for what it is.

Cristiano, is good. I am not calling him great or legendary, because that’s crossing a boundary that’s still too far out of my reach. I’m taking baby steps... maybe someday I might call him great, maybe I won’t.

So far I haven’t convinced myself that he’s outstanding, but I definitely like him better than I did when I started writing this... so it’s hard to tell... nothing is impossible now, is it?

Curiously, given that among the continent’s big five leagues, the English top division is seen as the most open, Phillips is one of only three players to scoop the Golden Shoe while based in this country. The others are Ian Rush and Thierry Henry, a two-time winner. No Manchester United player has ever held the title.
The Golden Shoe, administered by the publishers of World Soccer, uses a weighting system to give players in the major leagues a chance against the strikers from such as the Albanian and Faroese divisions who would otherwise have it sewn up. Goals scored in the best divisions, such as the English Premier League, are awarded two points; those in the intermediate divisions, such as the Scottish Premier League, 1.5 points; and those in the weakest divisions, such as the League of Wales, a single point. It is why Rhys Griffiths of Llanelli, with 37 points, is sixth in the standings despite scoring 37 times compared to Ronaldo, who has scored 26 league goals and has 52 points. Fernando Torres and Emmanuel Adebayor hold fourth and fifth places respectively, but Adebayor is a little too far behind, and while Torres is capable of the type of heavy goal burst needed to take him ahead of Ronaldo, with Liverpool concentrating on Europe the chances of him doing so are slim.
Nor does Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, third in the table, seem much danger to the Portuguese. The Ajax striker has already scored more times (29) but goals in the Dutch league are only worth 1.5 points and Huntelaar is running out of games. It leaves Sevilla’s Brazilian maverick, Luis Fabiano, as the only player likely to deprive Ronaldo, a lover of coloured footwear, from taking gold. Fabiano is four behind Ronaldo but Sevilla have two games more than Manchester United remaining in their league campaign.
If Ronaldo is often the victim of rough play, Fabiano was once one of its keenest perpetrators. During his early career his misdemeanours were almost as numerous as his goals. On one occasion, in the Copa Libertado-res, an opponent from River Plate had his neck marked by Fabiano’s studs. Mr Angry only calmed down when he worked under Sevilla’s former manager, the serene Juande Ramos.
The similarity between Ronaldo and Fabiano is that neither began as heavy scorers. Fabiano has 22 goals in 23 games this season but had previously scored 22 in 75 games. Ronaldo’s first year at United brought six goals in total; his second nine but only five in the league, and in Europe he was outscored by David Bellion. His third season saw Ronaldo reach double figures for the first time but it was only in his fourth campaign, 2006-07, that he became a scorer of substance. Club records lie within Ronaldo’s reach. Denis Law, 44 seasons ago, is the last United player to reach 30 league goals for the season and the most ever scored was 32, by Dennis Viollett, in 1959-60. Law’s overall record for a season, 46 goals, is unlikely to be broken but all you need to know about how prolific Ronaldo has been is that he has already scored more than Ruud van Nistelrooy ever managed in a league campaign.
Sir Alex Ferguson has no specific explanation for Ronaldo’s development, regarding his scoring as merely one expression of a brilliant all-round game. “It is something we didn’t know he had,” said Ferguson. “When we signed him as a young player what enthused was his ability to attack defenders. He was always a wide player as a kid and we bought him on that basis. That’s why we keep playing him there, because it’s difficult to attack players in the wide positions.”
Ferguson surprised Roma by using Ronaldo as a central striker but does not imagine repeating the tactic on a regular basis. “Not when he can do what he does from the wing. But he could play anywhere, I’m telling you,” Ferguson said. “It’d be no problem.”
Bernd Schuster, Real Madrid’s manager, last week proclaimed Ronaldo the best in the world in what appeared to be another attempt by the Spanish club to unsettle United’s totem. “In a couple of years he [Ronaldo] may be wearing the white shirt at the Bernabeu.” Ferguson is not alone in wondering whether Schuster himself will still be at the Bernabeu in two years, given Real’s love of sacking managers, and reacted wearily. “We get used to it. It’s Real’s way of tapping the player and Uefa don’t do anything about it, so there’s no point bothering,” Ferguson said. “Ronaldo is delighted here. United is his place.”

Carlos Tévez risked incurring the wrath of Sir Alex Ferguson yesterday when he broke rank by claiming that Manchester United should grant Cristiano Ronaldo his wish and let him join Real Madrid.

Rio Ferdinand has led the chorus of pleas from United players urging Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford, but Tévez, the Argentina striker, believes that the club should not stand in the Portugal forward's way if he requests a move. “The [United] team has great players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, of course,” Tévez said. “It's clear that he is a very important player for us, but this is a personal decision, which is up to only him.

“I understand Cristiano. Every footballer wants to play at Real Madrid. On the other hand, I also think that everyone wants to play for Manchester United, but if what he seeks is something else, I think that should be respected. I have not talked to him, but when these things happen, neither side feels good.”

United made it clear that Ronaldo will not be sold after Ferguson, the manager, met the 23-year-old in Lisbon last week, but that appears to have done little to deter Real, even though a bid has yet to be lodged. Ramón Calderón, the Real president, and Bernd Schuster, the club's coach, have made no secret of their desire to sign Ronaldo, and yesterday Guti and Raúl, two of the club's senior players, spoke in support of the move.

Wesley Sneijder, the Real midfield player, claimed recently that some of Real's first-team squad would take umbrage if Ronaldo signed for the club on wages far in excess of theirs - with the Spanish champions reportedly prepared to pay him up to £200,000 a week - but Guti disagrees.

“We would be delighted to have him,” the Real playmaker said. “He wouldn't upset the good atmosphere and, anyway, people tell me he's a great person and a good team player. Everyone works to earn as much as they can get and if he's one of the best players in the world, he should earn more. Maybe he won't win you the Champions League on his own, but he's very tricky and he'll win you games. With players like that, you've always got chances to win plenty of titles.”

Guti's sentiments were echoed by Raúl. “I see no reason why he would cause problems,” the Spain forward said. “I think it could be very positive because we have a great squad with a lot of big players and it is obvious that if a player of a very high level joined he would be welcome and helped to adapt. Our good form will continue whether Cristiano comes or not - and at whatever price. Nothing will break up the unity we currently have.

“I think that Cristiano is a player that everyone would want. He is certainly one of the best, but it is a sporting and a technical decision. If they [club management] believe he is necessary, they will try and sign him.”

David Gill, the United chief executive, however, has reiterated that Ronaldo will not be sold at any price, with Real said to be willing to pay £67.5million for the player. “We made it clear to them [Real Madrid] from Day 1 we wouldn't welcome a bid, it wouldn't be accepted and therefore I don't think there is much point in putting one in,” he said. “That's where we are at with the situation.”

Manchester United brushed aside Bolton to move three points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

It was United's game in hand on Arsenal and they did not waste it, while Chelsea drew 4-4 at Tottenham on what turned out to be an excellent night for Sir Alex Ferguson's team.

Ferguson left Wayne Rooney on the bench while Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs were rested completely as part of seven changes from the team that won at Derby.

But any hope Bolton had of a positive result dissolved when Ronaldo struck after eight minutes. Poor control from Abdoulaye Meite gifted possession to United and within seconds Carlos Tevez appeared to be clean through after controlling a cross from Louis Saha with his chest. It was a slightly heavy touch from the Argentine, allowing Ricardo Gardner to make a decent covering tackle, but after Bolton failed to clear the subsequent corner Ronaldo struck the ball into the floor and up into the opposition goal.

Bolton had set out with five across midfield - and a plan to frustrate their superior opponents, but within 20 minutes that hope lay in tatters.

A disappointing evening for Meite, which ended when he was withdrawn at the break, continued when his foul on Ronaldo was punished in brilliant fashion by the Portugal international. His strike from a central position 25 yards from goal swerved and dipped at the last moment, leaving Al Habsi helpless.

It was Ronaldo's 23rd Premier League goal of the season - taking him three clear of Fernando Torres at the top of the scoring table. It was also his 33rd goal of the campaign in all competitions - and takes him past the season record set by George Best in 1968 of 32 goals by a winger.

The match might have been different had Davies managed to convert an excellent cross from Danny Guthrie with the score at 1-0 but his cushioned volley was well saved.

Nemanja Vidic, Nani and Tevez all threatened before the break as United looked to exorcise the ghosts of the 1-0 defeat at the Reebok in December.

And Nani came close to a third seconds after the restart, only an excellent low save by Al Habsi stopping his free-kick.

To their credit, Bolton refused to be cowed and enjoyed an excellent period of play. Kuszczak made an excellent save to tip over a long-range strike from Nicky Hunt and the United keeper followed that with a low dive to thwart Gavin McCann. El-Hadji Diouf had the ball in the net from a free-kick but the goal was ruled out as the referee had not blown for him to take it.

United continued to pose a goal threat and Al Habsi did well to prevent Ronaldo completing his hat-trick.

Manchester United pipped rivals Chelsea to clinch their 17th title triumph with victory at Wigan. It sent manager Sir Alex Ferguson dancing down the touchline in the rain at the JJB Stadium in triumph as United were confirmed as champions, two points clear of runners-up Chelsea.

And for Giggs it was the perfect way to celebrate equalling United's appearance record of 758 games held by Sir Bobby Charlton, who was watching the game from the directors box. Charlton was equally elated and made his way to the tunnel to embrace Giggs after the final whistle.

There were ecstatic scenes as thousands of Manchester United supporters inside the JJB celebrated a second successive title as Giggs lifted the Premier League trophy.

Wigan were as good as their pre-match words, putting up fierce resistance before United made their superiority tell when it mattered. United were strengthened by the return of Rooney and Nemanja Vidic after injury, but Wigan proved more than a match in a closely-fought first half.

Paul Scholes was rightly booked by referee Steve Bennett for a wild challenge on Wilson Palacios as United fought to establish a foothold, although he also posed their best early threat with a 20-yard shot which he pulled wide.

Boyce then wasted a half-chance for Wigan before Steve Bruce's side were denied what looked to be a penalty after 22 minutes when Rio Ferdinand leaned to block Jason Koumas's shot with his upper arm. Wigan's frustration increased 11 minutes later when Bennett pointed to spot after Rooney tumbled under Boyce's challenge and Ronaldo sent Chris Kirkland the wrong way with the minimum of fuss.

Scholes was then the beneficiary of remarkable leniency from referee Bennett when, having already been booked, he blatantly blocked Palacios as he escaped down the right flank. As the whole stadium awaited the red card, Scholes and United were relieved when Bennett only delivered a stern lecture.

The second half began in a deluge, with the pitch becoming treacherous, and Ronaldo tested Kirkland with a rising 30-yard free-kick which the keeper turned over the top.

Wigan may have felt they were due a stroke of luck, and they got one after 52 minutes when Scholes was clearly fouled by Titus Bramble but referee Bennett and his assistants this time ignored United's claims.

United were more impressive after the break as they went in search of the second goal that would virtually seal the title, but Kirkland saved brilliantly low to his right from Rooney. Kirkland was Wigan's hero again after 58 minutes with a crucial block from Carlos Tevez's deflected shot.

United made a double change with 25 minutes left, sending on Owen Hargreaves for Scholes and Giggs for Ji-Sung Park in quick succession.The title was on its way to Old Trafford after 80 minutes, and fittingly it was veteran Giggs who scored the clincher, taking Rooney's clever pass in his stride to slide home a composed finish from 12 yards.

United's second, plus a late equaliser for Bolton at Chelsea, sparked scenes of wild celebrations among the visiting fans who will now focus on the European Cup final in Moscow.

Manchester United won the Champions League by beating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw. It sparked wild celebrations for Sir Alex Ferguson and his players in the Moscow rain as United won Europe's elite trophy for the third time, a triumph made more poignant as it came 50 years on from the Munich air crash.

Ferguson had made it his mission to take the trophy back to Manchester this year in memory of those who died, and those who survived, in the tragedy in Munich in February 1958. And it gave the 66-year-old Scot his second Champions League triumph, repeating the success against Bayern Munich in Barcelona in 1999.

The opening exchanges amounted to little more than sparring, but the game burst into life after 20 minutes following an aerial collision between Paul Scholes and Claude Makelele that left both players with a yellow card and the Manchester United veteran with a bloody nose.

Ronaldo had been giving Michael Essien a torrid time, and his threat was transformed into tangible results after 26 minutes when he soared above the Chelsea defender to meet Wes Brown's cross and head his 42nd goal of the season.

Chelsea were almost gifted an equaliser in bizarre circumstances seven minutes later when Van der Sar was forced to claw away a header from his own defender, Rio Ferdinand, after Drogba forced Lampard's cross into the six-yard box.

Petr Cech somehow denied Manchester United a second in the 34th minute after a stunning move that swept from one end of the field to the other in an instant and left Chelsea exposed. Wayne Rooney found Ronaldo with a raking pass, and his cross was delivered to perfection for Tevez, whose header was blocked by Cech - who then recovered to make a magnificent one-handed save from Michael Carrick's follow-up effort.

Tevez was denied again four minutes before the interval when he escaped the attentions of Makelele but could not slide in Rooney's low cross. United were left to regret their missed chances when Chelsea took advantage of several slices of good fortune to equalise on the stroke of half-time.

Essien's shot was speculative at best, but two crucial deflections off Vidic and Ferdinand saw the ball fall kindly for Lampard, who slotted in a neat finish - and his celebration demonstrated that the goal was dedicated to the memory of his late mother Pat, who died in April. Chelsea were transformed by the equaliser, passing with purpose and looking the more likely side.

And the much-debated Luzhniki Stadium pitch was suddenly starting to exert an influence, with both Ferdinand and Lampard suffering from cramp. Drogba had been a peripheral figure for much of the game, but he produced a moment of brilliance with 13 minutes left when he curled a right-foot shot against the post from 25 yards.

There was a moment of history three minutes from the end of normal time when Ryan Giggs replaced Scholes to make his 759th appearance for United, beating the previous club record held by United legend Charlton, who was watching from the stands.

United were left cursing 10 minutes into extra time when Chelsea captain Terry headed off the line miraculously from Giggs after Patrice Evra had shown pace and strength to fashion the opening. Rooney had suffered a frustrating evening, and he looked less than satisfied when he was hauled off as United introduced the pace and unpredictability of Nani.

Drogba was sent off four minutes from the end of extra time by Slovakian referee Lubos Michel for slapping Vidic after an ugly melee developed when Chelsea felt Tevez had been unsporting in returning the ball after a break for players to be treated for cramp.

The penalty shoot-out capped a thrilling game with passages of play of the highest calibre, with United dominating the first half but Chelsea showing huge reserves of character, resilience and ability to dominate after the break. Tevez and Carrick were on target for United as the shoot-out started, with Ballack and Juliano Belletti following suit for Chelsea.

Ronaldo then made a hash of his effort, stopping in his run-up before seeing his kick saved by Cech.

Lampard was successful from the spot and Owen Hargreaves scored under pressure before Ashley Cole's penalty took Chelsea to the brink of victory.

Nani scored to prolong the tension, but with defeat staring United in the face, Terry threw them a lifeline with his miss.

Substitutes Anderson and Kalou traded successful kicks before Giggs threw all the responsibility on Anelka as the shoot-out reached sudden death - and it proved too much for the striker, who saw his penalty palmed away by Van der Sar to crown United as kings of European football once again.
